Forces :

Turning effect of forces

Modern sports combine physical power with disscipline and mental strength for success. Many events have developed into highly specialized activities with their own kind of training methods and even designer diets for maximum performance.

The competition schedule of a major sporting extravaganza like the Olympics reveals that quite few of the sports featured require the athletes to show a sense of balance. Success in others depends on how they lower their centres of gravity for stability. Some of these are mentioned below.

In athletics, the events that require balance include the hurdles, high jump, discus, and the hammer. In the pool, the obvious ones are the diving events. Weightlifting, though mor a display of brute force, is also about balance. Otherwise, the barbells will crash!.

Judo and Fencing competitors have to maintain a low centre of gravity to execute their move or strokes without being fellled to the ground or put out of position.

Cycling in the velodrome requires a fine sense of balance especially at top speeds. However, nowhere is the demand for balance and stability while executing feats of prowess more than in the gymnastics arena. There, competitors twist their bodies and turn on rings, "horses", somersault in the air (divers also do similar things) and other impossible feats.
